A Night in the Shepherd’s Hut at Sowing Joy Farm

A tiny-house farm stay on a Post Falls flower farm, with sheep outside the window, a fire pit at sunset and U-pick blooms in season.

By Kiana · October 2026

The dark gray Shepherd’s Hut with a wooden porch, surrounded by fall trees

Some places you visit, and some places you settle into the second you step on the porch. The Shepherd’s Hut at Sowing Joy Farm in Post Falls was the first night of our North Idaho farm trip, and it was the stay we kept talking about the whole drive home. It’s a tiny-house farm stay on a working flower farm, with sheep outside the window, a fire pit at sunset and a sheepdog who will happily take all the pets you can give him.

Inside the hut

The bed nook with plaid pillows under the window

The Shepherd’s Hut is Sowing Joy’s tiny-house farm stay, tucked at the edge of the pasture. It’s cozy and thoughtfully done, with a bed nook under the window, a kitchenette with a stove and fridge and a full bathroom.

Out front, a wooden porch with rocking chairs looks out over the pasture, and the fire pit is just steps away. It’s small in the best way: everything you need and nothing you don’t.

The story behind the hut

The owners first fell for shepherd’s huts while watching the British home show Escape to the Country, where a couple had restored an old hut as a glamping rental. Written accounts of shepherd’s huts go back to the late 1400s, and by the 1800s they were a familiar sight across rural England, giving herdsmen a place to shelter out in the fields. Most were abandoned by the 1970s, but today they’re making a comeback as restored rentals, home offices and summer houses.

With family roots on a farm in England, the owners knew a shepherd’s hut had to be part of Sowing Joy. Building one in Idaho turned out to be anything but simple: that classic rounded roof took some searching to find a crew willing to build it, and the interior was finished twice before it was just right. Their hope is that guests come to the flower farm to relax, unwind and connect with nature and each other.

Life on the flower farm

Sowing Joy is a family flower farm in Post Falls that Ondrea and Chad Kidd started in 2020. They grow heirloom flowers using organic practices and host U-pick events and on-farm workshops like wreath-making and floral arranging, all under a big open-air pavilion with chandeliers. The farm also runs a program called Petals of Joy that donates flowers to local organizations and people who need a little brightness.

Meet the farm animalsFrom the hut’s deck you’ll look out on Jauque and Sophia, the farm’s sheep, who have lambs throughout the year. Lambert, their sheepdog, stays with them and keeps them safe from predators. We loved giving him pets through the gate. Ducks and chickens patrol the flowers and veggies, and we took a stroll through the flower field even though most rows were getting winterized, it was still beautiful! In the warmer seasons you can go out and pick your own bouquet during your stay.

Good to know before you book

  • Book ahead, especially on fall weekends and when the farm has a class on the calendar.
  • Come in the warmer months if you want to pick your own bouquet straight from the field.
  • Pack boots for wandering the flower rows and pasture, plus layers for cool evenings at the fire pit.
  • Sowing Joy hosts classes throughout the year, so follow @sowingjoyfarm for announcements.
  • Traveling with a little one? Our daughter loved seeing all the animals and walking the farm. Her pack n play fit well in the small space so it was cozy but still plenty of room for a family of three!
